Basically, he's the ace and clean up batter of Ugumori High's baseball team, one of the teams the main protagonist's team faces during the fall tournament.
Personality:
First impression from Umemiya may not be a good one to most people. His appearance and speech pattern is basically of a punk's: pompadour hairdo and the scar below his left eye and his sharp gaze, as well as unrefined mannerism in demeanor and speech pattern gives off a negative impression. The main protagonist, Eijun Sawamura, even comments about this when they run into him in the bathroom before their match, calling him "Bad-mouthed Cornhead." Eijun and his friends, Haruichi Kominato and Satoru Furuya, are all intimidated by Umemiya for a brief moment. However, his friendliness when he starts speaking to them quickly disproves his intimidating outward appearance and takes the Seido first years by surprise. He can look scary, but he doesn't go out of his way to snap at people.
Umemiya has a headstrong personality. He's always been this way, not holding back on his words. That's how he got into fights even before, most likely; being blunt with his opinions is what got him into a fight with an upperclassman in middle school, to the point where punches would be thrown. It's never said how he got his scar under his eye, but it wouldn't be surprising if this personality trait of his is the reason behind it. He doesn't find any issue with how he is. In fact, he goes around provoking the opposing team, whether it be before the match or even during; he kept riling Mei Narumiya, ace pitcher for Inajitsu, during their match and it was clear Umemiya was having fun with that. He also provoked Furuya when they ran into each other in the bathroom before their match, bringing up how nasty Mei's pitching was.
"Make a chance? Make a miracle?! I don't really get it, but that's what we're gonna do!"Umemiya's high optimism is what keeps the team spirited. As the main source of strength in the team by being the ace pitcher and the cleanup batter, he is spirited in particular throughout the entire match, boosting morale for the team even when they are on the losing side. The more challenging the batter in front of him is, the more fired up he gets to pitch. It's the same when he's standing in the batter box as well; he gets pumped the more difficult it is to get a hit from a pitcher. Even when his pitches get hit, he takes it lightly and moves on to the next pitch. The high morale is what proves Team Ugumori to be such a difficult opponent to face; it throws off the opposing team to stick to their usual play styles, creating opportunities for mistakes. It even drags the audience to side with them even when Ugumori is the visiting team, which definitely makes it harder on the opposing team to keep their own morale up.
He's definitely a mood maker, being the center of attention most of the time. The "big boss" behind Ugumori would be definitely Nao, but for the upfront liveliness Umemiya takes up on that; he's the one making the team laugh and relaxed with his silly antics, from being clumsy and losing his shoe during the match as well as taking forever getting dressed afterwards by talking about the big points of the match they had during the day.
With how provoking and forward he is, as well as how his play style is in baseball, Umemiya brings up a front that he's fearless. It may be true that he's not afraid of Satoru's monstrous pitches, or Eijun's difficult to pin-point pitches. He just doesn't like running away from challenges, and is the reason why he would provoke others, as well. In a way, it's a means for him to boost his own morale up and be on the offensive side. This is shown especially in the final inning of the match against Inajitsu, where he manages a hit from Mei's pitch and runs onto the base he yells at the other runner to not stop and charge into home base, bringing up the Battle of Okehazama as a comparison.
"Quitting is the easiest and the most boring thing to do!"Umemiya himself doesn't think of himself as a brave person; in fact he thinks of himself as the complete opposite, that he's a "chicken." He has turned away from the sport of baseball once. It was because the people playing the sport at the school were rude and he didn't want to deal with that. This, to Umemiya himself, was a means of "chicken out." He didn't want to deal with the troublesome act of keeping the upperclassman happy, so he ran away from responsibilities of being the underclassman on the team and turns to the path of delinquency. He comes to dislike running away in his second year of middle school because of what happens to Nao Matsubara; he gets in an accident and is left with a disability of unable to move his legs. He saw Nao at his weakest, crying while laying on the hospital bed, and at his strongest where he told the group they were friends with that he's still aiming to get to Koshien even if it means he'll be a team manager. That's when Umemiya realized how pathetic and boring he was for quitting the sport just because he didn't like the people on the team. To him, someone like Nao is who you would call a brave and strong person, and someone he will support to achieve his dream.
Abilities: He's the ace pitcher and clean up batter for Ugumori. He has a distinctive pitching style that enables him to throw various types of slow curve balls, which lets his fastballs look a lot faster than it actually is. He can do some sort of fighting, being an ex-delinquent and all, but definitely not an expert at it. He also has a knack of losing his shoes during a baseball match... But otherwise, he's a normal high school kid who plays piano from time to time.
Alignment: Thras. While Umemiya doesn't fully consider himself as a brave person, much of his actions taken as a baseball player in his team is nothing other than being brave most of the time. His play style is extremely offensive because he knows his team is the underdogs when facing the powerhouses. He takes risks when on bases because it will get the team closer to a point and therefore to a win.
Other:

He's an idiot.

[ prompt c of april's intro log ]
[ So. Luring the bees. Umemiya wants to think he's gotten through a bunch of hurdles in his teenage years, but they weren't like this. Wearing a bee costume? Luring the bees with emotions? Didn't people know punks don't necessarily have control over their own emotions? They're delinquents for a reason... ]
It doesn't make any sense... [ He's grumbling under his breath, a little irritated. ] How the hell do I do sweet thoughts? Do I think of sweet snacks or something??
[ He's not directing his questions to anyone in particular, but answers would probably help him out because all he's getting is confusion, which is fueling frustration and annoyance. Anyone passing by might pick up on his frustration from the frown showing up on his face, although said frown is looking more like a glare than anything else because of his looks. What makes it clearer of his current state of emotions is when small things burst into tiny flames.
That sure is the opposite anyone wants to do, because the bees are now trying to attack him. When he notices the buzzing coming towards his way, Umemiya jumps. ]
Whoa! Shit! [ With a yell, Umemiya takes off, running away from the bees as he yells at the top of his voice. ] Move outta the way!! Bees incoming!!! How the hell do you think of sweet shit?! [ It's the annoyance doing the talking, since potted plants and water bottles are exploding as he runs by. ]
Questions: None!
